Poodle joins dog lifeguard team on Spanish beach

Nilo, a two-year-old Standard Poodle, has recently joined a dog rescue team at Las Lindas beach near Malaga, Spain, alongside a group of four Labradors. His role involves assisting lifeguards in towing distressed swimmers back to safety. Nilo is distinctive not only for his fluffy white coat but also for the life vest he wears and the sunblock applied to his nose. Traditionally, dog rescue teams in Spain have predominantly utilized breeds like Labradors and Newfoundlands for these tasks, making Nilo's presence a unique addition to the squad. His handler, Miguel Sanchez-Merenciano, a dog instructor, explained that he enters the water first to assess the situation before calling upon Nilo or the other rescue dogs to aid in the recovery of swimmers in need.

Historically, Poodles were bred in Germany for water rescue, mainly for hunting and retrieval purposes in northern European lakes. Their name derives from the German verb 'puddeln,' which means 'to splash,' reflecting their aquatic roots. Nilo's intelligence and exceptional learning capacity have been highlighted by the American Kennel Club, making him well-suited for rescue operations despite facing challenges in his training. Initially, Nilo was fearful of loud noises and large crowds, necessitating a gradual approach to his training. Over time, he has transformed from swimming awkwardly to mastering a horizontal swimming technique, effectively using his tail as a rudder. This progression showcases not only Nilo's adaptability but also the dedication of his trainer in preparing him for his important role in beach safety.
