Eric Dane, the actor known for his role as Dr. Mark 'McSteamy' Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy", has shared a candid update about his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. In his first television interview since his diagnosis, Dane recounted the initial symptoms he experienced, starting with weakness in his right hand. Initially attributing the issue to fatigue from excessive texting, he sought medical advice after noticing a decline in strength. Following consultations with multiple specialists, Dane was ultimately diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy. He expressed the profound impact of the diagnosis, noting the constant reminder it serves as each day: "I will never forget those three letters. It’s on me the second I wake up."

As his condition progresses, Dane has reported significant loss of function in his right arm and hand, expressing concern that he may soon lose mobility in his left hand and legs as well. Despite the challenges he faces, Dane remains focused on his family, which includes his two teenage daughters from his marriage to actress Rebecca Gayheart. He emphasized the importance of their relationship, stating that they have become better friends and co-parents since their separation. Dane also continues to engage with his work, maintaining a hopeful outlook about his future. He stated, "At the end of the day, just, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can," and he firmly believes that this is not the end of his story, highlighting his determination to continue living fully despite his diagnosis.

“I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand,” Dane told “Good Morning America.” “I didn’t really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I had been texting too much or my hand was fatigued. A few weeks later I noticed it had gotten a little worse, so I went and saw a hand specialist who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist who sent me to another neurologist who said this is way above my pay grade.”
