Barcelona sign goalkeeper Garcia on six-year deal

Barcelona has officially signed goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol after activating his release clause, which is set at 25 million euros (approximately £21.3 million). The 24-year-old keeper, who has been a standout performer in La Liga, will join the Spanish champions on a six-year contract starting this Friday. Garcia’s decision to remain in Spain comes after interest from prominent clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United. Having made his debut for Espanyol in 2021, he has accumulated 67 appearances and played a pivotal role in the club's promotion to La Liga during the 2023-24 season. His impressive performance last season included making the most saves in the league, totaling 146, which was crucial for Espanyol's survival in the top flight.

Garcia's signing comes at a critical time for Barcelona as they seek to bolster their goalkeeping options. Last season, first-choice goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen faced significant injury challenges, specifically a ruptured patella tendon that kept him sidelined for much of the season. In his absence, former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who came out of retirement at the age of 35, stepped in and played 30 matches across all competitions, contributing to Barcelona's success in winning La Liga. However, Szczesny's short-term contract is set to expire at the end of June, prompting the need for a long-term solution in goal. Garcia, despite not yet earning a senior cap for the Spanish national team, has represented the country at various youth levels and achieved a gold medal with the Olympic team in Paris last summer, showcasing his potential and readiness for the challenges ahead in one of Europe's top clubs.
