The chase commenced around 4 a.m. when police officers noticed a suspicious dark-colored Audi A1. However, due to the vehicle's excessive speed, the pursuit was called off shortly after it began. Moments later, the same vehicle was spotted on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road, prompting an officer to approach on foot. A man has been taken into custody after allegedly ramming a police vehicle with a stolen Audi in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after an early-morning pursuit during which police fired at the car.

Police officers patrolling in Bondi began following a “suspicious” dark-coloured Audi A1 about 4am and a pursuit began, but ended the chase a short time later due to the speed, detective superintendent Jodi Radmore said.

Shortly afterwards the vehicle was spotted on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road in Bondi. As an officer approached on foot, the car allegedly “accelerated towards the officer” and the officer discharged a firearm at the car.

“The vehicle then collided with a police car and drove away,” Radmore said. Neither of the two police officers at the scene were injured.

The vehicle was spotted by a member of the public in North Bondi at 6.30am and shortly afterwards a 37-year-old man who is known to police was taken into custody.

“It was necessary to take him to hospital for an assessment, and we will continue our inquiries when he’s released,” Radmore said. She said she was not aware of any physical injuries.

Police checks revealed the vehicle was stolen from Double Bay on Friday night, Radmore said.

On the officer’s decision to discharge a firearm, Radmore said police “review all matters involving police use of force in a number of ways, and that will come out through the investigation”.
