In late March, I went into my back garden and we planted flowers. I remember it was after school so I was a bit tired, but there was a light spring breeze, and it was a lovely sunny day.

The flowers we planted were violas, poppies and daffodils. Mummy wrote the names of the plants on ice-lolly sticks and stuck them in the soil (very helpful). I also found an ant trail! I accidentally dug up a clew (group) of worms (yuck, but it’s nature). Then, we had to wait …

After that I watered the plants every day and searched for any hint of life in the soil. Now, in mid-April, I can see some minuscule seedlings sprouting. It is so exciting! This is the first time I have ever successfully planted some plants! A few reasons why I think they are growing well are: the temperature outside is really refreshing (just maybe a little bit too cold), there is enough water, and I put the plants outside so they are getting enough fresh air. There needs to be lots of nutrients too so the seeds can germinate (become saplings/teensy flowers).

Sadly, one of the three daffodils we planted died. Next to them we found a monumental snail (it was only the size of half of my fist, but still big for a snail). But the violas and poppies have been super successful. I actually think we planted too many of them. I am still watering the plants every day – just little but often – and waiting for the flowers to come.Isabel, nine
